New York is still fixing the DMV system it shut down in February

Government Technology reported on 20 April 2026 that New York State officials shut down and overhauled the statewide DMV system in February to modernize it. After the system came back online, users hit problems with credit card machines, delayed reimbursements, and Real ID cards printed with old photos.

DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder met Oneida County Clerk Mary Finegan and Madison County Clerk Michael Keville in Utica to work through the local fallout. Keville said processing is slower under the new system, enough that his office will replace retiring staff rather than shrink by attrition.

California cancelled 11,000 written test results over suspected cheating

KQED reported on 14 July 2026 that the California DMV sent reevaluation notices to 11,000 drivers after finding irregularities in written knowledge exam results. Spokesperson Jonathan Groveman said the pattern suggested some people "may have attempted to circumvent the testing process using various cheating methods".

The agency has referred multiple cases to county district attorneys. A notice is not a finding of cheating, but drivers who do not retake and pass within 30 days lose their licence.

Virginia DMV launched its first cannabis-impaired driving campaign

Prince William Living reported in August 2026 that the Virginia DMV launched its first cannabis-impaired driving campaign, built around the line "Relaxxxxx, don't drive high". The Highway Safety Office developed it with Two Tango Collaborative and tested the concept with a focus group before production.

Virginia recorded 233 drugged driver fatalities in 2025, with 117 attributed to cannabis including poly-cannabinoid use. DMV Commissioner Saundra M. Jack, the Governor's Highway Safety Representative, said impaired driving is illegal and dangerous no matter the substance.

The Teamsters are suing the California DMV over self-driving truck rules

The Hill reported on 6 August 2026 that Teamsters California sued the California DMV and other agencies in Alameda County over the 28 April 2026 amendments to the state's autonomous vehicle regulations. The union argues the DMV skipped the Standardized Regulatory Impact Assessment required by the state Administrative Procedure Act.

The filing says the rules threaten the jobs of more than 200,000 employee semitruck drivers in California, and that the DMV's position that no jobs would be eliminated is indefensible. The case is pending, and the California DMV had not commented at publication.

The consulting case for moving DMV work online

Boston Consulting Group's "Less Line, More Online" analysis argues the effective DMV model is blended, not digital-only. In its state case study, moving transactions online within 19 days shifted about 6,000 transactions and saved customers an estimated 750 hours of waiting. Putting PIN retrieval online cut call volumes by 15%.

BCG also describes one state that cut onsite wait times by 60% to 70%, and mobile DMV pop-ups in areas it calls DMV deserts. The direction of travel matters for plate buyers: more states are pushing personalised plate applications into the online queue.
