How it works

How many letters can a license plate have?

Use your state DMV's plate availability lookup. Most states have a free online tool. Brainstorm on this site, shortlist 3 to 5 options, then verify each one on your DMV site before you pay.

What makes a good 7 letter license plate?

A strong plate reads correctly on the first glance, sounds like a real word or name, and still means something to you in five years. Common tricks: drop vowels, swap letters for lookalike numbers (3 for E, 1 for I, 0 for O), and test it on a friend before you commit.

Are there words or combinations that get rejected?

Yes. DMVs reject profanity, slurs, drug and gang references, official codes (police, fire, military), and anything that spells a banned word when read in a rear-view mirror. Coded versions of banned words are rejected too. Have backup options ready.
